Unfortunately, I can’t show you a photo of the back of this dress since this was from years ago.
You should try joining the chains first before working the first row of sc’s. All of my patterns are reflections of what crochet knowledge I have back when I created the design, and I didn’t know that I could actually join chains before working on the first row of sc’s.
This should help out with the space you see at the first joining. Lovely dress!

I am struggling to make the starting first round to look good I was hoping t get a nice finish like seamless but I am failing terribly. Perhaps this imperfection on the first join is inevitable Do you have a picture from the back of the dress?
Hi, Gigi. Try using a smaller hook and check the fit once you reach Round Adjust accordingly depending on the fit.
The next Rows can be adjusted by using snaps, anyway, so are less important when figuring out whether yoi have the right gauge or hook. I use us 1 hook 2.

Whenever I make my own pattern, I try to avoid doing any sewing as a I don’t sew much and b I don’t like the look of the seam I make when I do sew.
While I agree with you about wanting to get inside watbetty’s brain, I’m just sharing my own notes pattern and try my best to create the look that I want.
This is great, thank you — but watbetty makes them, at least the color blocked ones, flat. Sews them up afterwards. Makes doing the blocking easier than in the round, certainly.
Her dresses fit like gloves, hugging every curve of each doll. I wish for an hour I could get inside her brain and write out her basic patterns!!!
